The most extensively used form of creatine is creatine monohydrate. It is a white powder which is almost tasteless and dissolves in water. Ideally, creatine should be taken together with some carbohydrate-rich food. This is because the carbohydrate increases the concentration of insulin in the blood stream which, in turn, helps the creatine to be absorbed by the muscle cells. Fast-acting carbohydrates such as dextrose are commonly used in creatine supplements as they create a faster insulin spike, however it could also be taken with carb-rich snacks such as a banana or brown bread.
